Take a trip to the neighboring village of Hédervár. In the village, you’ll find an abandoned castle, surrounded by a gently flowing stream and a vast park. Its ancient, mysterious beauty leaves a deep impression even in its deserted state. In front of the castle stand enormous plane trees, and beneath them, when I was a child, there used to be huge armchairs carved from stone.

While in the village, it’s also worth visiting the Gothic Boldogasszony Chapel, in front of which stands the oldest tree in the country.
There is another famous tree in the little village: the Kont Tree. From the road in front of the castle, head toward Darnózseli until you reach the stream. On the opposite side from the castle, a path runs along the stream leading to the tree, where, according to legend, conspirators against King Sigismund of Luxembourg once held secret meetings with the participation of Héderváry Kont. The legend says that a branch of the tree would always break off whenever a male member of the Héderváry family died. This latter legend may even be true: the family line died out, and the tree itself has since withered away.
